Mérida depicts much of the splendor of Colonial Mexico. The Spanish
Conquistador Francisco de Montejo founded Mérida in 1542 on the site of a
former Mayan city he destroyed. Splendid regional dishes and traditional
music and dances local to this region are found in restaurants, theatres and
shops housed in palatial mansions along Paseo de Montejo - a boulevard
fashioned after Paris' Champs Elysée. Progreso, Mérida's port city, is only
30 kilometers north. Being centrally located, Mérida is a practical hub to
explore all of the splendors of the Yucatán Peninsula.
The aim of the sponsors is to promote progress in the broad field of
mechanics by (1) exposing mature engineers and scientists as well as
advanced graduate students to new research findings, techniques, and
problems and (2) providing opportunities for personal interactions through
formal presentations and informal conversations. It is the only conference
sponsored by the American Academy of Mechanics.
The Pan American Congresses of Applied Mechanics (PACAM) are held every two
years, always in a Latin American venue, at a time when few other
conferences are scheduled. The previous Congresses were held in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil in 1989; Valparaiso, Chile in 1991; São Paulo, Brazil in
1993; Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1995; San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1997; Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil in 1999, Temuco, Chile in 2002, and Havana, Cuba in 2004.
Approximately 150 people from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and
Europe attended the last one.
