The National Conferences in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering began in 
1987 with the joint organization of Instituto Superior Técnico and the Naval 
Architecture and Marine Engineering Section of the Portuguese Society of 
Engineers (Colégio de Engenharia Naval da Ordem dos Engenheiros). The 11 
editions of the event were initially organized annually, later becoming a bi-
annual event, as well as one edition in 1997 organized in conjunction with the 
Association of Naval Architects of Spain.

Previous editions have constituted a regular forum for the presentation of 
ongoing work in the sector, creating the opportunity for technical and 
scientific debate of matters related with the various fields linked to the 
Portuguese maritime sector, with the aim of contributing to its progress.

It is intended to extend the conference beyond national borders starting this 
year, giving the event an international dimension, and in so doing, reflecting 
the real international nature of present day business and academic activities.

This year the event will also be associated with the 15 year anniversary of 
CENTEC, the Centre for Marine Technology and Engineering of Instituto Superior 
Técnico, which has been one of the main organizations of this series of 
events, and which is takes place when IST is celebrating its 100 years.
