PhD project: Discrete-continuum hybrid modelling of flowing and static regimes

We are seeking a full time PhD researcher with research interests in computational mechanics, computer modelling, finite element method (FEM), discrete element methods (DEM) and particle technology to join the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE - http://www.cimne.com/), where you will work on FEM-DEM hybrid modelling for simulating granular flows. The candidate is expected to register for PhD study at the Technical University of Catalunya (UPC-BarcelonaTECH - http://www.upc.edu/) where CIMNE is located.

Project Details
The objective of this PhD will be the simulation of granular flow both with continuum and discrete modelling.  Both static and flowing regimes will be considered. 
The combination between finite element and discrete element technology will be explored to create a hybrid model for the simulation of engineering problems such as the mass flows of funnel flows in silos. A multiscale approach will be used for the particles flow simulation and fluid-structure interaction techniques will be developed to correctly evaluate the interaction with structures.

A large number of validation tests will be carried out with the help of other partners of the network (such as University of Edimburgh , Nestlé and University of Twente) to check the validity of the developed technique.

The candidate will be asked to develop the numerical formulation of the problem and to implement the same within the context of available frameworks present in CIMNE such as KRATOS multiphysics (http://www.cimne.com/kratos/).

Requirements and Training

The ideal candidate will have an MSc degree or a first or upper second class honors degree in a relevant field such as civil or mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, materials science or related areas. Knowledge in numerical methods and computational mechanics in general and a solid knowledge of python and c++ programming would be advantageous. Furthermore, an appropriate qualification in the English Language together with excellent communication and organizational skills are required.

The successful candidate will be offered a full time contract for 36 months with the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) located in Barcelona, Spain. 

CIMNE (http://www.cimne.com/) is a research organization in Barcelona, Spain. CIMNE was created in 1987 as a Consortium between the Catalan Government and the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC). It is an autonomous RTD center focusing in promoting and fostering advances in the development and application of numerical methods and computational techniques for the solution of engineering problems in an international context. CIMNE employs some 200 scientists and engineers from different technical fields and nationalities.

CIMNE has over 25 years’ experience in the education of young researchers in advanced particle-based, discrete and finite element methods and software for the solution of multidisciplinary engineering problems involving particulate flows and fluid-structure interaction. CIMNE is located at the Technical University of Catalunya (UPC http://www.upc.edu/), the second largest technical university in Spain with over 30000 students covering most engineering degrees. CIMNE has access to the computer facility of the Barcelona Supercomputer Center located at UPC and to the experimental laboratories in structural, soil and fluid mechanics of UPC. CIMNE collaborates with research institutes and Universities worldwide.

There will be further opportunities for short secondments to partners such as University of Edimburgh (www.ed.ac.uk/about/), Nestlé and University of Twente –Netherlands- (www.utwente.nl/ctw/msm/), and work in close collaboration with others researchers in the network. Moreover, you will participate in a wide range of T-MAPPP networking activities, workshops, short courses, dedicated sessions at international meetings, and network conferences.

This fellowship is offered in the context of a Marie Curie Initial Training Network and transnational mobility is a key element of eligibility. Therefore your eligibility for the post is determined by Marie Curie terms and conditions. Researchers may be either EU citizens or from outside the EU (subject to relevant immigration formalities), but applications will only be accepted from candidates who must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisations for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the date of selection by the host institution (short stays such as holidays are not taken into account).
