We regret to inform you of the passing of Professor J. Tinsley Oden on
August 27, 2023 at the age of 86.

A central pillar of the computational mechanics community, Professor Oden
made groundbreaking and sustained contributions in the fields of
computational and applied mathematics and numerical analysis. He was the
founding director of the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and
Sciences, at the University of Texas in Austin. Formerly known as ICES,
the Institute was named in Professor Oden's honor in 2019.

Professor Oden published over 600 refereed journal articles and was an ISI
Highly Cited author. His career is decorated by a very long list of
distinguished awards and honors from various societies. These include, for
example, the Theodore von Karman Medal (1992), the John von Neumann medal
(1993), the IACM Congress Medal (Gauss Newton, 1994), and the Timoshenko
Medal (1996). In 1988, Professor Oden was elected to the US National
Academy of Engineering for his pioneering work in computational mechanics.

Professor Oden was a regular participant at IACM meetings and gatherings,
and he was an IACM Founding Member in 1981. He served as the second IACM
President, after Professor Olek Zienkiewicz, and he was a member of the
Executive Council until 2022. He will forever be remembered as both a
gentleman and a scholar. He was equally generous with his ideas and love
for all things computational mechanics, and his scientific contributions
will no doubt serve as inspiration for young computational scientists for
generations to come.
