Abstract
Finite elements for beams in space, using Lagrangian interpolation of cross-sectional translations and rotations, are developed for static and dynamic nonlinear analysis of space frames, The elements can have initial curvatures and torsion. Examples of geometrically
nonlinear static analyses and natural frequency calculations are presented.
It is shown that serious limitations arise in the modelling
of shear deformation effects, specially with regard to torsion, Such deficiencies have received little attention in the literature, because most applications have been limited to plane bending. Sugestions for improvement of such elements are presented.
