Dear Colleague
On behalf of the International Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC), we are
pleased to inform you of the Tenth International Conference on Optimum
Design in Engineering. The meeting will take place from 7 - 9 September 2007
at the Hilton Myrtle Beach Hotel, USA.
Conference papers will be reviewed by members of the ISAC and other
colleagues, and if selected, will be published in hard book form by WIT
Press and will be available to delegates at the time of registration. In
addition, the proceedings will be widely distributed after the conference
through the international book trade and by direct announcement to readers
and librarians. All papers will be permanently archived in the Transactions
of the Wessex Institute on our eLibrary site, which is available to the

INTRODUCTION
=============================================================
OPTI 2007 is the Tenth International Conference in this successful series on
Optimum Design in Engineering.
The objective of this meeting is to communicate recent developments in
advanced types of structures, particularly those based on new concepts and
new types of materials resulting in optimum solutions.
Particular emphasis will be placed on computational methods to model,
control and manage new structural solutions and material types. This
integration of their
design together with optimisation technologies is evident in all aspects of
industry and research.
Engineering design is enhanced by adding optimisation methods and their
influence cannot be over-emphasised. The resulting solutions provide an
efficient way of dealing with some of the most difficult challenges in
engineering
practice today.
The conference aims to attract papers describing case studies in
engineering, considering static, dynamic analysis and damage tolerance.
Manufacturing and
structural protection issues are going to be discussed as well as papers on
emerging applications in fields such as biomechanics. Contributions on
numerical methods and different optimisation techniques are also welcome as
well as papers on new software. Optimisation problems of interest to the
meeting involve those related to size, shape and topology or material
properties.
Previous conferences have been held in Southampton, UK (1989); Boston, USA
(1991); Zaragoza, Spain (1993); Miami, USA (1995); Rome, Italy (1997);
Orlando, USA (1999); Bologna, Italy (2001); Detroit, USA (2003) and
Skiathos, Greece (2005).

PUBLICATION OF PAPERS
=============================================================
Papers presented at OPTI 2007 will be published by WIT Press in a volume of
WIT Transactions on the Built Environment (ISSN 1743-3509). In addition to
being available to delegates at the time of registration, the hardcover
volume
will be publicised directly to researchers and institutional libraries and
distributed
widely through the international book trade.
The papers will also be archived online in the Transactions of the Wessex
Institute Collection [http://library.witpress.com]. The Collection provides
the international scientific community with immediate and permanent access
to individual papers presented at WIT conferences. WIT Press is committed to
offering authors the option to make their work freely accessible to
colleagues through their Open-Access service.
Coverage of WIT proceedings appears regularly in notable publications and
databases, including Applied Mechanics Reviews (AMR), Cambridge Scientific
Abstracts, Ei Compendex, INSPEC, Thomson Scientific, Scitech Book
News as well as the Directory of Published Proceedings.
Access to papers is available on a pay per view basis or as part of an
